ACTIVITIES

Doing stuff makes you feel better, science says so. Check out the list of awesome things that you could do to be a happier human!

ART

Go to an art museum, it’s actually cooler than you imagine, especially on a date, that’s extra points.
Or, make some art yourself, head down to the craft store and buy some supplies and make something. Then, if you’re like me, throw it away before anyone sees it. It’s more about the process than the result.

B

BEACH

Sun and salt water solve many many problems. Plus you might get to see pretty people in swimwear…

BOWLS

Lawn Bowls is awesome. It’s in the sun, there’s cheap food and the stories that the old boys will tell you will be 50% bullshit, 50% true and 100% entertaining.

BUDGETING

Ohhh yeah… a night in budgeting! It will however put your mind at ease to know where all your money is going.

BOXING

Sometimes depression can make you angry… Boxing lets you get that out by punching stuff hard. Perfect.

C

COACHING

You’ll be surprised how much you’ll enjoying giving back by coaching someone else. Help out a kids rugby team, chess team or finally pass on all that World of Warcraft knowledge you’ve been building up.

COOKING

Cooking is like a meditation exercise for some. But even better, you get to eat your meditation.

COMMUNITY

Join a work social team, the Rotary, a sports club, whatever… Hanging out with a great bunch of people with a common goal will always make you feel better. Join a LMA Community Facebook Group while you’re at it.

CYCLING

Get fit, see the countryside, wear clothing that hugs your genitals, what’s not to love?

DANCING

At home, at a bar, by yourself or with friends, dancing makes you feel good… just ask Tommy Franklin.

DIY

Building stuff is awesome. Dodgy spice rack? Skateboard Ramp? Bookshelf? Whatever… get a project going.

E

EXERCISE

We all know that you should exercise, healthy body, healthy mind and all that… so find something  that you love to do that involves moving your body and do it with friends. Two birds, one stone and all that…

EAT WELL

Your diet is so important, it makes the chemicals that make you happy. You don’t have to go complete hippy on it but you should seriously consider cutting out sugar and processed carbs as both have been proven to contribute to depression.

F

FISHING

Sea, mates, sport, good food… fishing has it all! Bring back some for us.

FAMILY

Be it the family you were born into or the family that you’ve made for yourself, make sure you make quality time for them. We’re all in this together.

G

GAMES

Cards, monopoly, jenga… they’re all good, grab some friends and have a game.

GARDENING

Get out in the sun, at one with nature and help nurture some pretty plants or some delicious veges. You’d be surprised how healing a handful of soil can be.

GREEN TEA

Good for you, tasty and known to help calm the mind. Might as well drink a cup right?

GRATITUDE JOURNAL

Gratitude is one of the cornerstones of happiness. Pick up an LMA version or simply start your own. Just take a minute to stop and think about all the awesome things in your life right now…

H

HELP SOMEONE

Sometimes the best way to help yourself is to help others. See if any of your friends need anything from the emotional to the physical. They’ll appreciate the help and you, which feels amazing!

HOLIDAY

Stress sucks – Holidays are great. Even if you can’t get far away, trying taking a mini vacation on a weekend in your home town.

HUGS

Hugs are awesome! Not getting enough? Go offer some. Giving and receiving is exactly the same in the world of hugs!

I

INVEST IN YOURSELF

You should always be investing in yourself. Read a book, take a course, learn a new skill… whatever it is that can help you be a better person.

INITIATE

Depression takes away your will to initiate anything. Just knowing that is half the battle. Now that you do, try to make an effort to make things happen, you’ll be better off for it.

J

JOGGING

Yip, go for a run. The exercise is good for you but it’s also a type of meditation and can be some great alone time to reflect on everything that’s going on.

JUGGLING

J’s a tough letter to come up with something for… so yeah, try juggling, just don’t tell your friends about it. EVER.

K

KNITTING

Relaxing, meditative AND you get a new scarf out of it!

KAYAKING

SSEE. (Sun, sea, exercise, exploring) We just made that up, it needs work. In saying that, it’s a great activity if you live near the water.

L

LAUGHTER

Laughter yoga is catching on here… and if you can’t find that then go to the comedy, we go every two weeks just to simply laugh our asses off for a couple of hours.

LOVE

Give it. Get it. Make more of it. Love makes the world go around…

M

MEDITATION

Research suggests that regular daily practice of meditation can help calm your mind, improve concentration, boost your immune system and help you observe your thoughts rather than react to them. It’s also a great way to just take some time out of your busy day and find peace of mind again.

MINDFULNESS

The Western version of the Buddhist practice, mindfulness helps us reduce stress and increase our happiness. Google that shit!

MUSIC

Make a playlist called “Happy” and put all the songs that make you feel good on it, whenever you’re feeling a little down put the playlist on and reflect just how awesome music is.

N

NIGHT OUT

Dinner party, quiet drink with friends, evening adventure around the city… get out there and see the sights.

NAP

Many of the greatest minds in history swear by afternoon naps. Short sleeps re-vitalise the mind and body, try it.

NATURE

Nature called… she wants you to come outside. Enjoy a beautiful sunset, a walk along the beach, observe some squirrels foraging for nuts in the local park. Take those shoes off and get your feet dirty.

O

ORGASMS

By yourself or with a partner, it doesn’t matter… science has proven that orgasms and sex have many many health benefits for the body and mind. Science. Oh, and it’s fun if you hadn’t realised already…

ORAL HEALTH

Clean your teeth, floss, scrape your tounge. All things that will help you get some of those orgasms we talked about earlier, but also help remove bacteria in the mouth that which research suggests could affect our moods.

P

PHOTOGRAPHY

Almost everyone now has a camera capable of taking nice photo these days… even with your phone. Pick a project and start snapping.

PETS

Want some unconditional love, something to look after and a friend forever? Get a dog. (LMA, like Google, is officially a dog organisation, even though Dan has a cat that his mother looks after.)
You could also get a cat, fish, horse, elephant, rat or moose. All of those are also sanctioned.

Q

QUIT SMOKING

Smoking ain’t cool, it also costs a fortune, oh, and it kills you. It’s also not good for depression…

QUIET TIME

Whether you call it meditation, mindfulness or quiet time, just take some time for yourself, chill out and quiet your mind, it will make you feel better.

R

READ

Reading is good for your brain. Turn off the telly, shut down the twittergram and open up one of those dusty paper looking devices sitting on the bookshelf over there.

REST & RELAXATION

We all need to take time out from our busy modern lives and just chill out. Make time to just do nothing and relax and your mind and body will thank you for it.

S

SLEEP

One of the greatest things that we can do for our own well-being is get some good sleep. Meditating before bed puts me straight into a deep sleep!

SUNLIGHT

Vitamin D is key to keeping us happy, make sure you don’t keep yourself locked indoors, get out and bask in some lovely sun. If you’re not getting enough sunlight, consider getting a sun lamp over the winter period and take some good ol’ Vitamin D supplements.

SWIMMING

Water is amazing… why not play in it? Learning to swim is also fantastic exercise.

T

TAKE THE STAIRS

Whenever possible, take the stairs. A simple way to get yourself fitter.

TIDY UP

A clean and tidy house/office is a great way to keep your mind at peace. Try it.

U

UNKEMPT

Have a “Hobo Sunday” and decide that just for today you’re going to live like you don’t give a f*$k about what others think of you. Don’t have a shower, don’t worry about what you are supposed to be eating, just chill and take time for yourself. Just make this only a one day initiative ok?

V

VITAMINS

Correct balance of vitamins is key to making sure our body is producing the right happy chemicals for our brains! Take some.

VOLUNTEER

‘The best way to cheer yourself up is to cheer someone else up’ – Mark Twain. Find a cause you believe in, that means something to you, and go join it.

W

WATER

Water is life. It’s that simple… It also flushes out your stress hormone cortisol which will make you feel a lot better. Yay.

XX

THE XX

There are not many ‘X’ things… So just stop for 7 minutes and listen to this song… it will make you feel better.

Y

YOGA

Yoga has so many amazing mind and body benefits we’d need to write a novel to list them all here. And as Dan will tell you the benefits he’s received have been – improved sleep, calmer mind, stronger body, weight loss to name a few.

YAHOOS!

When was the last time you yahooed?!?! A simple yahoo can produce serotonin in your brain and make you happier. Become a kid again… go have a swing, a jump, a play…

YOGHURT

Yoghurt has lots of microscopic things called pro-biotics in it. These little guys are good for your stomach, and when your stomach is happy research shows that it can positively affect our mood. (And no, we do not mean to go out to KiwiYo and eat a bunch covered in candy…)

Z

ZOO

Animals are awesome. And at the Zoo you get to see lots of them, all in the one place. There’s Otters and birds and Zebras and Giraffes and Leopards and Monkeys and… you’re picking up what we’re putting down now yeah?!

ZORBS

Find yourself a nice hill, pop your self in a Zorb you have handy nearby and roll down it (just make sure at some point the hill stops). For extra credits you could insert some water for extra slide fun times.

Whatever it is… just got and find some yahoos!
